Spielberg signs for 2nd NBC action series

by Peter Johnson

Steven Spielberg, whose expensive underwater seaQuest DSV series isn't performing well for NBC, has another sci-fi, action-adventure show in the works for the network.

NBC has given Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment a 22-episode order for a new series called Earth 2, which deals with colonization of a new planet. Like seaQuest, the show is designed for an 8 p.m. ET/PT time period. Neither NBC nor Spielberg would comment Friday.

Meanwhile, NBC has decided to give seaQuest a high-profile, Thursday-at-10 boost Dec. 30 when it pre-empts L.A. Law - an attempt to get viewers who otherwise ignore the show to sample it.

seaQuest has had a rough time in its Sunday at 8 time slot, usually third behind ABC's Lois & Clark and powerhouse Murder, She Wrote on CBS. Last week, it placed No. 70 out of 88 shows.
